IMPHAL, Jul 2 : Laikot, a Kuki village located in Noney district under Khoupum police station, was attacked by unidentified persons armed with sophisticated weapons this morning and almost all the houses were burnt.
The attack came close on the heels of the similar attack and arson witnessed at Kongkan Thana, a Naga village and Phaimol, a Kuki village in Kamjong district near Indo-Myanmar international border on July 1, 2026.
A group of unidentified persons armed with sophisticated weapons approached Laikot village and attacked the village with a volley of shots. Village volunteers retaliated with licensed single- barrel firearms but they were soon outgunned by the assailants who reportedly wielded sophisticated weapons.
As the village volunteers could no longer face the onslaught, they retreated.
Moments after the village volunteers retreated, the assailants moved in and torched every house of the village.
Incidentally, Laikot village is located within Noney district, it is very close to Churachandpur district.
Women, children and elderly persons had already abandoned the village while young and middle-aged males were guarding the village.
Laikot village is located around 150 Kms away from Imphal, to the South East of Rengpang which straddles Imphal-Jiribam highway.
Meanwhile, the Kuki Inpi (Jiribam, Tamenglong and Noney) has alleged that the armed persons who attacked and burnt down Laikot village this morning were cadres of NSCN (IM).
