Time to show there is a Govt in place Instil confidence in the people

No one knows how long it would take for the conflict situation to blow over, but if one goes by what some Central leaders have had to say, then it could take years. A line they have sought to give legitimacy by pointing to the Naga-Kuki clash which went on for five years, that is from 1992 to 1997. What however has been conveniently overlooked is the fact that the Kuki-Paite clash did not last more than a year and the clash with the Pangals was resolved in a few days time. Conveniently overlooked is also the fact that in the case of the Kuki-Paite clash, the Government and neighbouring States chipped in their bit to resolve the issue and one can still recall how the Government of Mizoram played a proactive role to resolve the matter and ensure that the clash subsided. In the case of the Meitei-Kuki clash, which has crossed the three year mark, one has not seen any meaningful intervention from either the Centre or any Government of the North Eastern States, other than the divisive words used by some political leaders, which has only gone to add to the feeling of being wronged, a sentiment felt by either side. Now the Nagas of Manipur too have been dragged into the clash and it is ‘interesting’ to note than even after more then three months of the clash erupting, Delhi has ‘not yet taken cognizance’ of the issue. There is also nothing to show that Delhi intends to step in and see what may be done. And if Delhi has been quiet and ‘indifferent‘ to the latest round of clashes when even armed cadres from across the border have sneaked into Indian soil to torch villages, there is no indication that effective communications have been established to keep Delhi posted by Imphal. Even after nearly a month of the battered and mutilated remains of the six Naga hostages were recovered, one has not heard of Imphal coming out and stating its position. This is what is flummoxing and has the potential to give weight to the conspiracy theory doing the round, especially the demands that have been raised against an important Minister in the BJP led Government. Only Imphal can answer why it has deemed it better to maintain silence on the issue, but to the people and anyone with a little thinking capacity, the abduction and slaughter case of the six Naga men should have been an open and shut case. It is with a reason why numerous voluntary organisations had raised the demand to arrest the chief of Leilon Vaiphei village as well as the villagers, including womenfolk, who first accosted the Naga hostages and later handed them over to the Kuki militants and it is stupefying to note that the Government at Imphal has still not deemed it fit to take any action along this line.
It is the ineffectiveness of the Government that is hard to digest. After a number of houses were set ablaze at the border villages of Namlee, Wanglee and Z Choro on May 7, the Home Minister of Manipur had stated that there is no report of any onslaught from across the border while the Assam Rifles in a statement said that the villages were attacked by cadres of the KNA (B). The two opposing statements were received on the same day and even after nearly 60 days, Imphal has not shown what action it has taken up. More than clear that the Government at Imphal has not been addressing issues which the people want and this is what is extremely exasperating. And Manipur knows how the situation has been like after May 7 and after the mutilated bodies of the six Naga men were found on June 10. Just one day before the mutilated bodies of the Naga men were discovered, the 14 Kuki hostages in custody of the Naga people were set free, safe and sound and the sense of anger and injustice felt by the Naga people should be understood against this backdrop. On so many points the Government has been found wanting. There is nothing to show that some action has been taken up after two passengers travelling on the Imphal-Ukhrul road were shot dead in a clinical ambush on April 18 this year. There is also nothing to show that the Government is anywhere near cracking the case of the rocket propelled grenade that landed inside a room and killed two sleeping children at Thinungei in Bishnupur district in the wee hours of April 8. Nearly two months back, but still now there no official statement on the people who killed the three Thadou Church leaders on May 13. The Government must do something to earn the trust of the people.
