IMPHAL, Jul 3: In a significant development that has provided some relief to truckers, the NHIDCL has started repairing damaged sections of the National Highway-37.
Work to repair some damaged sections of the highway under Noney district is currently underway, said the Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC).
This came after the TDC representatives met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) recently.
The TDC had also submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) yesterday seeking its intervention to improve the highway.
Appreciating the NHIDCL for initiating the repair work, TDC said it could provide some relief to the drivers who are facing extreme difficulties on the road for several weeks.
The TDC also urged the NHIDCL to maintain quality and swiftly complete the work.
Meanwhile, only one convoy of security escorting 150 vehicles reached Imphal from Jiribam today.
The 150 vehicles include 66 tankers carrying fuel and 84 goods trucks.
Expressing serious concern that the number of vehicles being stranded along the NH-37 at Jiribam and neighbouring Assam is increasing, TDC said the Government may make arrangements for bulk movement of vehicles.
Hundreds of loaded trucks are stranded along the NH-37 due to road conditions and reduction in the number of escorts, and the drivers are facing difficulties. Moreover, bringing in only 150 trucks a day will not be enough to sustain the demand and plug shortages of goods the State is facing, TDC said.
Moving the vehicles in bulk could reduce the number of vehicles stranded, ease drivers' woes and enable supply to meet the demand, TDC said.
