10 years RI for rape convict

IMPHAL, Jul 4: Additional Session Judge Fast Track Court has sentenced a 36-year-old convicted for sexually assaulting a minor girl to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
Additional Session Judge Ashem Tarunakumari passed the sentence of the October 2012 case today.
The convict Ningthoujam Bijen hails from Moirang Ngangkha Lawai and was staying at Konjeng Leikai Lanpoklakpam.
He was convicted by the same Court on July 1 under Section 376 IPC (rape) which fixed today for the sentence hearing. Lodged in Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa, Bijen appeared before the Court virtually.
Notably, the chargesheet in the case was filed by then OC Singjamei (now SDPO Imphal) N Ingocha in August 2015.
During the sentence hearing, Special PP asked the Court to award maximum punishment to the convict.
The defence counsel on the other hand submitted that the incident happened when the convict was at his young age. The convict belongs to the weaker section, earning meagre income and maintaining his family, said the counsel, praying for minimum punishment.
The Court after hearing the submissions, sentenced the convict to undergo 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. The Court also recommended a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the victim.
