IMPHAL, Jul 4 : A sit-in protest was held at Lamphel Sanakeithel today, demanding an end to a "proxy war" allegedly waged by the Government of India. Organised by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF), the demonstration was held under a banner written in Manipuri that roughly translates to "Stop the proxy war waged by mercenaries raised by the Government of India against civilians."
During the protest, which was attended by meira paibis from Lamphel Sanakeithel and adjoining areas, demonstrators held placards carrying slogans such as "Are security forces deployed in Manipur to bring packages of conflicts?" and "There is no point in deploying a large number of security forces if they cannot resolve the crisis," among others.
The protesters contended that the Government has not taken any meaningful steps to end the conflict, which has severely affected the public, particularly daily wage earners.
They also alleged that the Government of India has been pursuing divisive policies, while calling for unity among indigenous communities.
The demonstrators further stated that unity among all indigenous communities is essential for development and peaceful coexistence. They questioned why the Government of India is still silent when people from across the border had repeatedly attacked citizens. "Let us face the inimical forces that seek to disintegrate Manipur together," they appealed.
