Ganja worth over Rs 1 Cr seized

IMPHAL, Jul 5 : Security forces arrested four persons and seized 238.6 kilograms of ganja, valued at over Rs 1 crore, during a series of anti-narcotics operations conducted at different locations under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district last night.
The operation was jointly conducted by a combined team of the Anti-Narcotic Task Force (ANTF), Imphal East, personnel of Lamlai police station, CRPF Quick Action Team of the Manipur & Nagaland Sector and Range Imphal, and members of Youth Against Drug and Alcohol Manipur (YADAM)
According to police, specific information was received regarding the transportation of a large quantity of ganja along the Imphal–Ukhrul road.
Acting on the input, the combined team launched an anti-narcotics operation at Chingarel Tejpur under Lamlai police station.
During the operation, a Mahindra Bolero pick-up bearing a Manipur registration number, matching the description provided in the intelligence input, was intercepted near Poloi Football Turf at Chingarel Tejpur.
The occupant of the vehicle attempted to flee after noticing the police personnel but was successfully apprehended by the combined team.
He was identified as Mataimei W Shimray, son of WS Lengyo, a resident of Tuinem A-II village in Ukhrul district.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 16 packets containing ganja weighing 209.7 kilograms (gross weight, including packaging). The contraband was seized and Shimray was arrested on the spot after observing all legal formalities.
During preliminary interrogation, the arrested person disclosed that the consignment was intended for delivery to Ngangbam Dinesh (18), son of Suresh, a resident of Thoubal Leishangthem presently staying at Singjamei Yumnam Leikai, Ngakraba Thong, and Phuritshabam Yaiphaba (18), son of Laingam, a resident of Keibi Heikak Mapal Makha Leikai.
Based on the disclosure, the combined team waited at the spot and arrested both alleged recipients who arrived on a motorcycle. The two-wheeler used by them was also seized.
Further interrogation of the arrested persons led the team to conduct a follow-up raid at Pungdongbam Makha Leikai, where another 28.9 kilograms of ganja was recovered from the residence of Oinam Abung Meetei (42), son of late Ibobi Meitei.
The contraband was seized and Oinam Abung Meetei was arrested after completing the required legal procedures.
In total, the combined team seized 238.6 kilograms of ganja, one Mahindra Bolero pick-up and one motorcycle during the operation. All the seized items along with the four arrested persons have been handed over to Lamlai police station for registration of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further investigation, police sources said. The arrested persons are likely to be produced before the Duty Magistrate, Imphal East, for necessary legal proceedings.
