Moirang, Jul 5 :The Ancient Moirang Arts and Culture Protection and Development Committee (AMAC), Moirang, has announced that it will launch an intensified agitation from July 11 if the Government fails to take concrete measures by July 10 to facilitate a pilgrimage to the shrine of Ibudhou Thangjing at Thangjing Ching.
The Association claimed that the Governor had in April last year assured that arrangements would be made to ensure safe pilgrimage to the sacred site from this year onwards.
Addressing a press briefing at Moirang today, AMAC president Y Shyam Khuman said that the sanctuary of Ibudhou Thangjing, covering around four hectares, had been designated a sacred site by the State Government.
Saying that devotees, however, have been unable to undertake pilgrimage to the site since May 3, 2023, he added that the site of Ibudhou Thangjing was destroyed by the Kuki groups.
There had been instances of a cross being erected at the sacred site, he said.
Stating that the Kuki groups also desecrated several sacred sites of the Meitei community, including Koubru Laiphamlen, Ima Kondong Lairembi, and Ibudhou Wangbren Laiphamlen amid the conflict, Shyam said that they have submitted several memoranda to the Government to protect the sacred sites.
He claimed that the Governor, during a meeting with various organisations based in Moirang on April 2 last year, had assured that a survey and protection measures for the Thangjing sacred site would be carried out by April 6, 2025, including video documentation and communication of findings to stakeholders.
He further stated that the assurances also included demarcation of a four-hectare protected area, removal of unwanted structures, deployment of a CRPF platoon for safeguarding the site.
He also claimed that the Governor had given a verbal assurance that the Government would ensure safe pilgrimage to Thangjing and Koubru Laiphamlen in 2026.
The press briefing was also attended by representatives of Apunba Nupi Lup (ANUL) Moirang branch, Thangjing Pana Moirang Sub Division, Ibudhou Thangjing Seva Mandal Moirang, Apunba Ima Kumbi etc.
