IMPHAL, Jul 8 : Naga civil society organisations and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand failed to arrive at a common meeting point over the ongoing inter-district blockade imposed by the UNC as well as the killing of six Naga Liangmai men.
A number of representatives drawn from different Naga CSOs including the United Naga Council met the Chief Minister and the discussion centred around the blockade imposed by the UNC as well as the abduction and later murder of the six Liangmai Naga men.
The meeting held at the Deputy Dommissioner's office in Senapati failed to break the ice and no concrete agreement could be arrived at.
"We have had a fruitful and meaningful discussion. However, the talks were not conclusive," UNC president Ng Lorho told reporters after the hour-long meeting, reports the Eastern Mirror.
Referring to the six Liangmai Naga civilians whose bodies remain unclaimed, Lorho said that the UNC would not take custody of the bodies until its four-point charter of demands is fulfilled.
The six civilians were abducted on May 13 from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district. Their mortal remains were recovered during a search operation in the same district on June 10 and continue to remain at the JNIMS mortuary.
"From our side, we have reiterated our four-point charter of demands. Until those demands are fulfilled, we are not in a position to claim or take the dead bodies," he said.
The UNC's demands include the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups; the arrest of all those involved in the abduction and murder of the six Naga civilians; the arrest of the chief of Leilon Vaiphei village; and the removal of Nemcha Kipgen as Deputy Chief Minister.
"On the side of the Government, they requested us to lift the economic blockade," Lorho said. "They also conveyed their appreciation for the goodwill release of 14 Kuki hostages on June 9."
Demanding justice for the six Liangmai Naga civilians, the UNC has been enforcing an economic blockade on National Highway-2 and other highways passing through Naga-inhabited areas since May.
