IMPHAL, Jul 8: Volunteers of the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) staged a protest in front of the Manipur Secretariat at Mantripukhri today, alleging that the Government has remained silent over the use of substandard paper in the printing of academic textbooks by the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BOSEM).
During the protest, the demonstrators burnt effigies of the Commissioner (Education-S), the BOSEM Chairman, and the BOSEM Secretary.
The protesters demanded the resignation of the Commissioner of Education-(S), the BOSEM Chairman, and the BOSEM Secretary.
They also called for a thorough probe into the alleged scam involving the use of substandard paper in BOSEM textbooks and answer sheets.
The protest was later brought under control by the police.
Speaking to the media, DESAM president Oinam Romesh said they had repeatedly urged the Government to ensure the use of quality paper for printing textbooks and answer sheets.
Saying that their demand, however, had not been heeded, he said that the current academic session commenced with textbooks printed on substandard paper and without the prescribed watermarks.
He further alleged that their demand to constitute an inquiry committee to probe the issue and take action against the paper supplier had also been ignored by the Government.
Alleging that the conduct of BOSEM amounted to a misuse of public funds, he urged the Government to look into the matter and take necessary action.
