IMPHAL, Jul 8: The Department of Sports Medicine, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, has successfully performed Manipur's first-ever Arthros-copic Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) reconstruction surgery, marking a major milestone in advanced sports injury treatment in the State.
The Arthroscopic PCL surgery is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a torn knee ligament. It was performed on the right knee of a 17-year-old football player on July 1. The surgery was successful, and the patient has recovered well and is currently in satisfactory condition, said the hospital.
The procedure, which involved the arthroscopic reconstruction of the completely torn posterior cruciate ligament, was carried out by a team of Sports Medicine led by Assistant Professor Dr Pheiroijam Bhupes under the supervision of Professor Dr Akoijam Joy Singh and Dr Yumnam Ningthemba Singh, Associate Professor and Head of the Department.
The anaesthesia team was headed by Professor Dr Langpoklakpam Chaoba Singh.
The Director of RIMS said the landmark achievement will reduce the need for patients to travel outside Manipur for advanced ligament reconstruction surgery and further strengthens RIMS' position as a centre for modern sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery in the region.
The Director congratulated the surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and support staff, and stated that the achievement reflects the institute's growing capability to provide specialized arthroscopic reconstructive treatment.
