IMPHAL, Oct 15: Normal life in the State was severely affected today on account of the general strike called by several UG groups in denunciation of the merger of Manipur into the Indian Union on October 15, 1949.
Due to the general strike, Khwairamband Keithel and adjoining markets wore deserted looks. Shops and all private establishments remained shut.
Attendance at Government offices was quite low.
There was no inter-State or inter-district transport service although some private vehicles were seen on the roads. However, flight service was not affected.
Just like in Imphal, normal life was severely affected in all the valley districts of the State.
Moreover, hill districts were also affected to some extent as there was no inter-district transport service.
Although there was no report of any untoward incident, the general strike by and large was quite successful.
Notably, CorCom, ASUK and UPRFM called the general strike all over the State today from morning till evening denouncing the Merger Agreement.
