Shillong, Oct 28: The proposal of the Meghalaya State River Rejuvenation Committee for cleaning up the Wahumkhran and the Wah Umshyrpi has been approved by the Central Pollution Control Board. With this the State can seek a waiver of a fine of Rs 1 crore imposed on it earlier by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for non compliance with one of its orders.
The Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), C P Marak who is also the Principle Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) revealed this at a function on plastic waste management in Shillong on Monday.
Marak said that with this approval from the CPCB, the MSPCB can seek waiver of the fine of Rs. 1 crore imposed on the state earlier by the NGT for failing to comply with its orders to set up action plans to clean up rivers and solid waste management. Marak said that the Action Plan to clean these two major rivers draining Shillong city and its outskirts has assigned roles and responsibilities for every official functionary whether they are government, traditional institution or non-governmental organizations. “No one can do the cleaning up of these rivers alone, every person has to do their part,” he said. He also said that plans for rejuvenation of 5 other rivers of the State are on the anvil.
