DIMAPUR, Nov 20 : Oppo-sing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), the State of Nagaland witnessed an 18-hour shutdown on Tuesday evening and on Wednesday. The bandh was imposed by Joint Committee for Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) and supported by several organizations including Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC).
The "all Nagaland shut-down" started from 6 pm of November 19 and culminated at 12 noon today.
Shops and other business establishments did not operate during the bandh. Students appearing for examinations were exempted from the purview of the shutdown.
There was no untoward incident reported from any part of the State due to the bandh.
As the CAB 2016 is to be tabled once again in this Winter session of Parliament, the North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) had directed all federating organisations across the North East region a few days back to initiate "a united mode of agitation to oppose the passage of this genocidal Bill".
According to the JCPI, once this "contentious" Bill becomes an Act it will forever change the demography of the entire North East States where the indigenous population will become minority in their own land like Tripura.
Earlier, JCPI had "fervently" requested all the citizens of Nagaland to extend their full cooperation and bear with the inconveniences by suspending all normal activities and engagements to give a collective message to the Government of India to withdraw the controversial CAB 2016.
