IMPHAL, May 13 : Municipal Administration Housing and Urban Development (MAHUD) in collaboration with Manipur Urban Development Agency (MUDA), organised a one day workshop on Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and Plastic Waste Management rules 2016, for Urban Local Bodies at City Convention today.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner, MAHUD, M Joy said that solid waste management will remain as long as society exists but it is imperative to come up with a multi action plan to see how better technologies and methods can be integrated into solid waste management for better efficiency.
Door to door collection is the beginning yet primary duty and if the wastes are segregated properly, then a huge amount of time will be saved. It is also important for a collection centre or site to be identified, he added.
On the other hand, Director, MAHUD, Th Harikumar stressed on the importance of the elected members to be well aware of the solid waste management and plastic waste management issues which are faced by the Urban Local Bodies and added that the one day workshop has been organised with that in mind.
The workshop also aims to deliberate on the directives of the National Green Tribunal regarding two cases, namely solid waste management rules and river pollution case.
Two line Department, Directorate of Environment and Pollution Control Board are also in collaboration when it comes to the workshop, he added.
He continued that steps will be taken up to create an action plan from month to month in association with the Urban Local Bodies members.
Deputy Director of Environment, Dr T Brajakumar said that the issue of waste management increases with development.
He also stressed on the importance of the people in effective management of the solid waste which amount to around 100-120 metric tonne which are coming out from Imphal city.
Director of Environment, Dr Y Nabachandra, Joint Secretary MAHUD Lemba were also present as well.
