IMPHAL, May 18: MEELAL has condemned the non representation of the Meetei Mayek (script) in the Indian currency till now. "Years after inclusion of Meetei Mayek in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, the script has not yet depicted in the Indian Rupee till now. It is sad that the State Government has shown no keen interest in pushing the matter further ," said MEELAL members during "13th Mayek Chatpa Numit Ningshing Thouram" organised at GM Hall, Imphal Saturday.
Speaking at the event, MEELAL president in-charge Yanglem Biren Meetei said that despite the recognition, the Meetei Mayek is yet to appear on the Indian currency. The State Government should pressure the Centre to include the indigenous script in the currency and preserve its identity, he said.
Talking on the sideline of the programme, he condemned that the successful candidates of the Meetei Mayek Teachers Eligibility Test 2013, organised by Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM) and MEELAL are still not employed yet.
Emphasising the need for collective effort in promoting the aged indigenous script, he urged the Government to perform its part and do all the needful for further development of the language/script.
To mark the celebration, the dignitaries and attendees paid floral tribute to photo of Akaba Meetei. Winner of Meetei Mayek competition held earlier were feted at the event.
Manipur Government Language Planning and Employment Director Dr Laishram Mahavir, Professor Dr Naorem Sanatomba (Manipuri Department, MU), COHSEM Secretary Chabungbam Biren and Meetei National Front president Chingshubam president Wangambi Leima and others attended the event.
