TURA, May 7: A vehicle overturned while negotiating a turn near the village of Asanang, about 20 km from the town of Tura in West Garo Hills (WGH) district, on the National Highway – 51.
The incident took place on Monday morning with one of the occupants of the overturned truck suffering minor injuries when the overhead toolbox fell on him. The goods truck was on its way to Tura from Dhubri in Assam and was packed to the brim with various grocery goods
The same section of the road, which has a very sharp turn, a few huge potholes, along with a stretch of straight road has led to at least 20 accidents in recent times, according to locals.
Recently a 12 tyre truck was completely detached from its carriage while negotiating the same turn.
“The road is very difficult to negotiate due to how it is made. They should have made things more gradual rather than have a hair pin turn just after a straight stretch of road. There is also no sign posted to warn drivers,” said a local resident.
Goods that were being ferried by the overturned truck were later loaded into another two trucks and brought to the Tura from the place of the incident.
Earlier on the same road, many lives had been lost in various accidents near the treacherous stretch of road along NH -51 near Dollongre, though work has now been done to reduce the bends which has ensured that no major accidents took place in the same area.
