District level sensitization meeting conducted

A district level sensitization meeting on “Reducing Violence and Promoting Access to Justice for LGBTIQ communities” was held with key stakeholders from Imphal East at ADR Building, Lamphel Court Complex today.
A press release issued by Deputy Member Secretary, Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) stated that the meeting was organised by MASLSA in collaboration with All Manipur NupiMaanbi Association (AMANA), Empowering Trans Ability (ETA) and Solidarity and Action Against The HIV Infection in India (SAATHII).
Sadananda Sorokhaibam, Deputy Member Secretary, MASLSA, while speaking at the meeting underscored the importance of reducing violence.
Randhoni Lairikyengbam, Assistant Director, SAATHII spoke about sustainable development goals and particularly on  Goal 16 which talks about “Peaceful and Inclusive Societies” and the need to bring inclusiveness for LGBTIQ communities in Education, Healthcare, Judiciary and Law-enforcement and how such meeting at the district level can help bring change.
Santa Khurai from AMANA elaborated on the various terminologies including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender etc.
Community members representing gay, lesbian, trans women and trans men also shared their experiences and challenges they face, during the meeting.
G Gaiphulshilu, Member Secretary, MASLSA strictly talked on the Supreme Court ruling popularly known as NALSA ruling while adding that the directive should be taken seriously.
Additional SP, Imphal East, District Co-ordinator, Child Line, Officers from Social Welfare Department and Integrated Child Development Scheme, Senior Specialist from CMO Imphal East, Paediatrician from JNIMS, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority and Advocate from Human Rights Law Network were part of the panel during the stakeholders consultation.
