Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme to be completed by June 2020

SHILLONG, Jun 25: The third phase of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS III) which is expected to mitigate the present water woes being faced by the residents of Shillong will be completed by June 2020 as has been informed by the state’s Public Health Engineering Minister Samlin Malngiang.
Malngiang also said that the laying of the main distribution pipelines from Mawphlang to 6th Mile, Upper Shillong has been successfully completed by the department.
“We have also held a joint meeting with the Deputy Chief Minister in-charge public works department (PWD) on the need to ensure the remaining work for laying of pipelines through the PWD roads is completed,” Malngiang said here on Tuesday.
Malngiang said that the PHE will be working together with the PWD for the successful completion of the project.
Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has also announced the successful commissioning of the GSWSS phase III.
“GSWSS Phase 3 successfully commissioned yesterday with water reaching Upper Shillong. This should resolve water supply issues in town to a large extend. Water has reached Upper Shillong reservoir successfully…official commissioning will be done soon,” Conrad said in his tweets.
The PHE Minister congratulated the department and since the water has reached the reservoir, it is now ready for distribution.
“Whereas for the remaining work, we still need one year time for the completion of the project,” he said.
It may be mentioned here that the project was approved by the Government of India at a cost of Rs 193.50 crore in October 2008. Earlier, the project was first targeted to be completed on May 2011.
The objective of this project was to create infrastructure to provide for the supply of additional 24 million litres of water to the projected population of Shillong Urban Agglomeration from 2011 to 2014.
