By Our Staff Reporter IMPHAL, Aug 25 : One of the tallest leaders of the country, Arun Jaitley began his public life with ABVP as a student activist. A staunch karyakarta, he fought and won the DUSU election in 1974 as the presidential candidate. He worked for DU students’ welfare during his tenure as DUSU president. Arun Jaitley also served as Editor of Rashtirya Chatr Shakti, a magazine which is circulated across the country. Significantly, publisher of The Sangai Express Sapam Nisikant Singh was the last personality to be formally inducted into the BJP by Jaitley earlier this year. In 1974, as an ABVP activist, Arun Jaitley led the Statewide mass movement 'Navnirman Andolan' against massive corruption by Gujarat Government and amassed youth and ordinary citizens to raise their voice against corruption. This andolan led to resignation of the then CM of Gujarat and toppling of the Govt. In the same year, ABVP karyakartas, under the leadership of the likes of Arun Jaitley, Ram Bahadur Rai, Sushil Modi and many more, formed Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti to protest against corruption and bad state of education in Bihar. The Chhatra Sangharsh Samiti later joined the JP Movement. Arun Jaitley also played an important role in the JP Movement. He was jailed for 19 months during the Emergency imposed by the then Prime Minister in 1975, destroying the democratic system of the country. Arun Jaitley went on to become the National Secretary of ABVP from 1977 to 1979. As the National Secretary, he contributed to the constructive activism of ABVP that gave voice to the students’ and youths’ concerns and strived to resolve their issues.
