IMPHAL, Aug 26: The State Assembly has unanimously agreed to rename Imphal International Airport as Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.
During the State Assembly session today, Chief Minister N Biren moved a resolution seeking to rename Imphal International Airport as Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.
Supporting the motion, ex-Chief Minister and Opposition leader Okram Ibobi pointed out that Imphal airport is one key airport which would connect India with many South East Asian countries.
When the Airport Authority of India demanded 300 acres of land for upgrading Imphal airport to an international airport, the then Congress Government gave 500 acres, he said.
The 500 acres were acquired by the State Government at the rate of around Rs 4 lakh per Sangam.
When the acquired land was handed over to the airport authority, one lady Executive Director remarked that handing  over 500 acres of land at a single go would be the first in the history of the Airport Authority of India, Ibobi recalled.
However, MLA S Subashchandra expressed desire to rename Imphal International Airport as Tulihal International Airport instead of Bir Tikendrajit International Airport.
