World Breastfeeding Week observed

Imphal, Aug 4: Development Organisation of Andro Kendra (DOAK) and Breast-feeding Promotion Alliance of Manipur (BPAM) jointly observed World Breastfeeding Week under the theme 'Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding' at Thambalnu Market Complex, Poiroupat Lamkhai Imphal East Sunday.
Speaking as chief guest at the event,  MAHUD Minister Shyamkumar stated that breast milk is the best gift of life a mother gives to her children.
"Breastfeeding affirms the bond of love between mother and her children. It is the best natural food for children," he said.
Expressing concern that women nowadays are consuming tobacco/betel nut (paan) as a popular culture, the Minister advised that consuming tobacco is bad for their health as well as their children.
Lactating mothers should never consume Paan and tobacco products. Breast-feeding by lactating mother who consume tobacco products is same as feeding poison to the child, the Minister said.
Pointing out that active breastfeeding makes children healthy, the Minister expressed concern that 'working mothers, especially in cities, are unable to breastfeed their children due to their hectic schedule and busy lifestyle.
Children who are not breast-fed well are at risk of major health problems, he said.
He also advised family members to help and assist mothers and provide them ample time to rest. They should be treated well with care, he added.
Shyamkumar also urged all concerned to conduct more such awareness programmes to sensitise mothers and family members on the importance of breastfeeding.
Members of DOAK, BPAM, students, doctors and locals attended the observance.
Ex- Pradhan, Tulihal Gram Panchayat Laishram Magha Singh, patron member of BPAM Dr Ksh Chourajit Singh, president BPAM Dr N Jitendra Singh, BPAM National trainers Dr Kh Ratankumar and Dr Shyamkumar Laishram also attended the event as presidium members.
