AMSU lambasts police action

IMPHAL, Aug 8 : The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has condemned the alleged brute force used by police on student volunteers who have been seeking justice in the mysterious death of Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu.
Speaking to media persons at their DM College campus office this afternoon, AMSU HRD secretary Bruce Pebam alleged that the State Government has been victimising students and other protesters instead of delving into the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Babysana.
He also demanded immediate release of all the protesters arrested by police.
It is a matter of shame for the State Government that it is still unable to establish whether Babysana committed or she was murdered.
Even as a large number of people and students have been protesting the death and seeking justice, they are being targeted by State police as their (police) enemies, Bruce decried.
Today too, a number of students were mercilessly assaulted by police and some of them needed medical attention, he said.
Pointing out that there have been many cases of students killed in police action during several protest movements in the past, the AMSU functionary expressed desire for the State police to deal with such public issues with greater maturity and discipline.
He alleged that police (male) personnel raided People Accommodation Centre, a girls’ hostel at Thangmeiband in the name of searching for some people last night.
He then asked if the Home Department would have taken responsibility in case any untoward incident happened in the course of the raid at the girls’ hostel.
It is a moral obligation for the entire student fraternity to seek justice and the truth if any student dies under suspicious circumstances, Bruce said.
He then urged the State Government to establish the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Babysana and punish all the culprits at the earliest.
