IMPHAL, Sep 2: Two tunnels constructed along Tupul-Imphal section of Jiribam-Imphal railway line  have been connected.
The two tunnels of which foundation stones were laid by former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in 2016 were formally opened by Lok Sabha MP Dr RK Ranjan.
Even though construction of the 300 metres long tunnel which begins on Tupul side has been completed, construction of the other tunnel which runs towards Imphal has been completed by only 300 metres while 410 metres are yet to be completed.
However the two ends of the two tunnels facing each other were formally opened today.
Officials of North East Frontier Railway told Dr Ranjan that construction of the remaining 410 metres  long section of the second tunnel would take around two years.
They told the MP that they have been facing several difficulties in constructing the railway line as heavy machinery and equipment cannot be transported along Imphal-Jiribam highway.
Nonetheless, Dr Ranjan asked railway officials to expedite the railway project as fast as possible.
