IMPHAL, Jan 14: While the Driver's Day is being observ-ed at various locations of the State today, an ASI of Manipur Police was caught on camera thrashing a truck driver who also happened to be a member of Senapati Truck Drivers Association.
The footage, in which the police personnel, who was masked, could be seen catching up to the truck driver on a car and thrashing the driver (even pulling out his service gun ), went viral on social media sites.
Following the incident, Kangpokpi SP promptly issued a notice suspending the police personnel identified as ASI Th Hitler of Kangpokpi Reserved Line Dhqs, further pointing out that such behaviour is quite unbecoming of a member of a disciplined force like Manipur Police.
On the other hand, taking exception of the incident and condemning the act in the strongest term, the Tran-sporters and Drivers Coun- cil (TDC) has demanded termination of the ASI.
Speaking to media persons, TDC president H Ranjit said that TDC lauds the Government for taking up such prompt action and suspending the involved police personnel.
However, the act perpetrated by Th Hitler is com- pletely unacceptable and he should be removed from the force permanently, Ranjit demanded.
If the Government fails to do so, TDC will launch different modes agitation, he warned.
Ranjit said that the victim driver might have been in the wrong during the incident, but to pull out a gun and threatening to shoot him is totally unwarranted and quite unbecoming of a police officer.
Instead of protecting the drivers who are risking their lives along the National Highways, from various anti-social elements, the police turned on the helpless driver, which is shocking and totally uncalled for, he added.
