IMPHAL, Oct 14: The Manipur Commission for Human Rights Commission has stopped construction or functioning of four motorised gates at Ithai Barrage following complaints filed before it yesterday.
Two separate petitions were filed before the Commission against installation of the motorised gates at Ithai Barrage.
The petitions filed by Salam Joy secretary of Pumlenpat Khoidum Lamjao Kanba Apunba Lup and N Sanatomba Singh president of the Rising Star Club seeking the commission's intervention emphasised that the gates, once operational would affect the villagers on both sides of Manipur River and deny them their right to life.
Taking up the case for inquiry under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the MHRC instructed the Deputy Commissioners of Kakching and Bishnupur district to respond/report on the matter and submit the same on or before October 27.
Halting the construction or functioning of the four gates till the pendency of  the proceedings before the commission as interim recommendation, it also directed the Deputy Commissioners concerned to implement the same.
The commission will be conducting a field enquiry on October 17 and the next hearing of the case will be held on October 27.
