World Food Day observed

 World Food Day was observed today under the theme ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain Together’ at the Farmer’s Training Hall, Directorate of Agriculture, Imphal East. The function was organised by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur.
Speaking at the occasion as the chief guest, M Joy Singh, Commissioner, Agriculture said that the United Nations established the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on October 16, 1945 and since its inception, World Food Day is observed across the world every year on October 16.
He said that according to reports, 25,000 people die due to poverty and malnutrition in a day, which includes 10,000 children. He maintained that a proper balanced diet is necessary for the overall mental and physical growth of children at least upto three years of age.
Stating that most of the people are unable to provide balanced diet to children due to poverty and other reasons, he said that there is a need to eliminate poverty which is possible with the joint efforts of different stakeholders including NGOs.
To become a malnutrition and poverty free world by 2030, 193 member countries of the United Nations have signed an agreement, he said, appealing to the people of the State and all stakeholders to work together for achieving the goals.
