IMPHAL, Mar 3 : Muvanlai Athletics (MA), Kangpokpi whose 4 game winning streak at the 13th Manipur State League was broken by Sagolband United on February 29, bounced back today to beat YUFC, Ukhrul 2-1 and go top with the help of Songpu Singsit second half brace.
YUFC dominated earlier proceedings and were 1-0 ahead till the break as Julian Keising connected to a fine pass from Th Naoba in the 31st minute and banged in past the MA keeper.
MA pressed hard in the latter half to draw level and Songpu Singsit was on target to ease the pressure after 78 minutes. The moral boosting goal greatly helped the Kangpokpi side and Songpu Singsit capped another fine chance to turn the table three minutes latter. The Ukhrul side who were stunned by the two goals toiled hard to comeback but MA defence did well to thwart the moves and deny any chance in the scoreline till the final whistle.
The result help MA rise on top of the table on 15 points while YUFC remain at 6th on 10 points.
Earlier in the day, GSC, Churachandpur thump KLASA, Keinou 2-0 to post third win at the tournament. The two sides were very much level in the first half marking their rivals tightly. And despite few close calls, two sides entered into the break goalless.
There was a shift in the pace of the Churachandpur side as the match resumed and eventually sealed the lead off a penalty kick in the 75th minute through Satgouthang as he was fouled inside KLASA box by Sachikanta Akoijam.
Lacklustre KLASA were further pushed behind with Lunmilen netting GSC's second three minutes away from time. With not much time left, KLASA were forced to put more men forward to find a consolation goal but ended up without any result and eventually GSC surged home 2-0.
The result help GSC move up a place to 10th in the table on 9 points from 7 matches.
NISA will face Sagolband United in the 49th match of the tournament on March 4 at 11.45 am before AFC, Thoubal play AIM, Khabam in the next match latter at 2 pm.
