IMPHAL, Apr 10: The All Manipur Road Transport   Drivers’ and Motor Workers’ Union (AMRTDMWU) has urged the authority concerned to pull up all those people who have been painting drivers and their helpers in a very bad light by uploading all kinds of baseless posts and comments on social media.
The union also urged the  Government to book drivers and their helpers if the report that they brought in non-local people from outside the State amid the lockdown is true.
A press release issued by AMRTDMWU general secretary Maimom Anil pointed out that the drivers have been serving the public by shipping in essential commodities continuously from outside the State amidst the strict preventive and control measures taken up against COVID-19.
It is a matter of grave concern that drivers and their helpers who have been serving the masses selflessly  are being projected in a very bad light with some people falsely charging them of bringing in non-local people in a stealthy and illegal manner.
The particular incident which took place last night involving a truck was grossly misinterpreted in social media.
All the people seated inside the truck were labourers from Telipati.
They were hired by the owner of the goods transported in the truck for unloading purpose.
Hiring of labourers had nothing to do with the driver, said the union.
Regarding the claim of Lamsang police that four non-locals were apprehended, the union clarified that the four individuals are drivers and helpers of two Tata DI pick-ups and they did not bring any other person.
The union then appealed to all concerned not to paint drivers and helpers in a bad and wrong light. All the people would face a catastrophic situation if the drivers decide to suspend their service amidst the lockdown, it said.
It said that drivers and helpers who are bringing in essential commodities should first report at ISBT on reaching Imphal and go for medical check-up for unloading what they shipped in.
The union further appealed to all concerned to provide cooked foods to drivers and helpers who, as  of now, have to cook their own food after reaching ISBT from either Dimapur or Jiribam.
