IMPHAL, Apr 23
A team of BJP Manipur Pradesh led by its president K Bhavananda Singh paid tribute to the brave martyred forefathers who sacrificed their lives fighting against the mighty British soldiers to safeguard the freedom and sovereignty of the State on the occasion of Khongjom Day, today at the party head office at Nityaipat Chuthek , Imphal.
On this occasion, BJP Manipur Pradesh remembered our forefathers who sacrificed their lives defending the honour of the land in the Anglo British War,1891. The British expected a walkover in the battle of Thoubal but our resistance lasted for 10 days. The British commander, Lt Grant was later awarded the ‘Victoria Cross’, the British highest gallantry award equivalent of our ‘Param Vir Chakra’ for his actions in Manipur.  This was a clear reflection of the strong and formidable resistance put up by the brave Manipuri soldiers, said a statement issued by BJP Manipur Pradesh.
Saying that the Battle of Khongjom was the greatest battle of the Anglo Manipur War, where gallant Manipuri warriors fought till their last breathe to safeguard the territory and independence of Manipur, it added that on April 27, 1891 the British forces occupied Kangla resulting at the end of freedom of all the Manipuris.
The statement also said that Major Paona Brajabasi, Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major, Loitongba Jamadar and Tikendrajit laid their lives in the Anglo-Manipuri war and appealed to the people of Manipur to unite and took a firm stand to defend the unity, dignity, and sovereignty of the State.
