IMPHAL, May 27: A Division Bench of High Court of Manipur yesterday directed State Government to implement Ministry of Home Affair, Government of India, order dated March 29 relating to protection of workers including migrants who are staying in rented accommodation amid COVID-19 lockdown.
It may be noted that the Ministry of Home Affair had ordered wherever workers, including migrants living in rented accommodations, the landlords of those properties shall not demand payment of rent for a period of one month and if any landlord is forcing labourers and students to vacate their premises, they will be liable for legal action.
The direction was given by Chief Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar and Justice Kh Nobin during hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the petitioner R S Khawungsing through his counsel Senior Advocate N Jotendro for appropriate direction to the authorities concerned to strictly implement the order of the Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affair, Government of India.
The PIL also sought waiver of rent for the entire duration of the lockdown.
The Division Bench directed the State Government authorities to implement the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affair order and issue notice returnable by June 16. The Court fixed June 16 for further hearing.
