IMPHAL, May 28: For the first time in Manipur, a zero-energy water lift treadle pump was introduced in Ngairangbam village, Imphal West, as front line demonstration programme (FLD) under KVK Imphal West, ICAR Manipur Centre.
The programme was launched on May 26. The technology will help in providing lift irrigation facilities in water scarce areas without using any external energy. The prog was initiated by Er Laishram Kanta Singh, SMS (Agri Engineering) and supported by Er Kh Hera Singh, Head, KVK Imphal West, and Dr I Meghachandra Singh, Joint Director, ICAR Manipur.
The treadle pump can suck water from 15 ft maximum depth, lift water up to 45 ft enough to fill an overhead tank, and it can transport water up to 1 km. This pump can easily run @ 5000lit/hr. The treadle pump weighs just 12 kg and can be ported to any place with minimum efforts. The treadle pump works on simple stepping motion. Hence, it runs without electricity and zero operational cost, which makes the treadle pump suitable for marginal farmers, said a statement issued by Er Laishram Kanta Singh, SMS (Agri Engg), KVK Imphal West, ICAR Manipur Centre.
The treadle pump can be used for any application where pumping of water is necessary, in case of sudden power-cuts, load-shedding etc, it said.
