KOHIMA, Jun 30: The Naga movement for self-determination is a mass based assertion for the Naga people's legitimate rights to be respected by any force that stands to oppose it, said the Naga Students' Federation.
In a statement, the federation said that the ensuing political dialogue at the Prime Minister's level to find a permanent solution to the vexed issue begun 23 years ago and have thus far seen 3 statesmen GOI appointed interlocutors prior to RN Ravi's appointment to the role.
The recent letter of Governor RN Ravi to the Nagaland Chief Minister, which portrayed the torchbearers of the Naga movement in "bad light reveals the arrogant attitude and insincere approach of the Government of India and their unwillingness to settle the issue. It also reeks of an attempt by the appointed symbolic head of the State to overthrow and overpower a democratically elected Government," it said.
"Much progress has been made on all fronts and we now stand at the threshold of a peaceful transition to a prosperous Nagalim after a solution that is honourable and acceptable to the Naga people is inked. However, there is absolutely no denying the fact that the adversaries of the legitimate people's movement have been trying to derail everything that has been achieved thus far through prolonged political negotiations. It is a matter of great pride that the Naga people continues to stand their grounds and weathered every storms that comes our way with patience and dignity," it said.
The NSF representing the aspirations of the Naga students and youths will not remain blind and mute to attempts by individuals to belittle and disregard the recognized movement. "As the group who will inherit the solution, the federation denounces and condemns the disrespectful attitude of RN Ravi towards our Naga freedom fighters. The usage of the terminology like gangsters, extortionists etc by the GOI appointed interlocutor only seeks to undo whatever has been achieved through the blood, sweat and tears of his predecessors," said the federation.
It continued that it has "lost all hopes" in an honourable and acceptable solution to the vexed Naga issue for as long as "someone with such minimal understanding of the issue and disrespectful attitude is at helm from the Indian side. The federation shall not shy away from openly stating that RN Ravi himself has been responsible for the many hiccups in the peace-process in his attempts to earn some personal brownie points," it alleged demanding RN Ravi to clarify whom he was referring to as 'gangsters and extortionists in his letter to Chief Minister.
Reminding RN Ravi that the GOI has officially recognized the Naga issue as a political issue, it said his (RN Ravi's) every single attempt to "downgrade" it to a State law and order problem will prove futile.
"It is time that he takes his role as an interlocutor seriously or call it quit altogether for even with or without him, the aspiration of the Naga people shall continue to thrive," said the federation.
