IMPHAL, Jul 21: Around 2000 people of Thoyee village, Kamjong district have been facing scarcity of potable water.
The village has around 360 households and they got more than sufficient volume of water from Mapithel hill. They drew water from Mapithel hill through a pipeline laid across Thoubal River.
However, the pipeline got damaged 20 feet below the water surface of Mapithel Dam thereby disrupting the natural water supply to Thoyee village. As such, the villagers have been facing scarcity of water since the past one month.
Deprived of any other water source, the villagers are now using rain water for their daily requirements. If there is no rainfall, the villagers face many problems and the problems are more acute for those families whose house do not have tin roofs.
Highlighting the problem to Phungyar AC MLA K Leishiyo yesterday, the Thoyee village chief appealed to the MLA to arrange an alternative source of water.
Subsequently, K Leishiyo went to Thoyee village today and conducted a spot assessment.
He also held a meeting with the village authority and the villagers. The meeting was also attended by ADC Ukhrul Vice-Chairman M Isaac, ADC Ukhrul Member S Thotaishang, SDO Phungyar KG Daigong and PHE Kamjong Division EE Chamdanlung Rongmei.
The village authority came up with several suggestions, both ad-hoc and permanent, to solve the problem of water scarcity.
K Leishiyo noted that the pipeline went under the water surface of Mapithel Dam when its gates were closed and it got damaged as it came under strong water pressure.
In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to ensure supply of potable water to each and every household of the country by 2022, a proposal for constructing water supply facilities at all the villages of Phungyar which have no such facility as yet including Thoyee has been submitted to the authority, Leishiyo said.
He assured that he would see if construction of a water supply facility for Thoyee village can be initiated within a week.
Highlighting the possibility of recurrence of the same problem (damage on water pipeline) when water is drawn from across Mapithel Dam, the MLA said that he would see if a reservoir can be constructed on the side of Thoyee village. He said that he would study if a new suspension bridge can be built over Thoubal River at Mapithel.
Categorically stating that coronavirus is here to stay for a longer period, K Leishiyo appealed to all the people to learn to live with the virus.
Later, the MLA inspected different spots together with the officials and villagers where a water supply scheme can be constructed.
