IMPHAL, Jul 22: Titular King Leishemba Sanajaoba was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) today.
The titular king in traditional attire took the oath in Manipuri in the Parliament.
He pledged to uphold the Constitution in the name of Lainingthou Sanamahi, Ibudhou Pakhangba and Shri Shri Govindaji.
Rajya Sabha Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu administered the oath to 45 of 61 newly elected Members of the Upper House.
Some of the Members who took oath include Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sumer Singh Solanki from Madhya Pradesh; Nabam Rebia from Arunachal Pradesh; Bhubaneswar Kalita and Biswajit Daimary from Assam; Vivek Thakur from Bihar; Abhay Bharadwaj, Ramilaben Bara and Narhari Amin from Gujarat; Ram Chander Jangra from Haryana; Indu Goswami from Himachal Pradesh; Deepak Prakash from Jharkhand; Ashok Gasti and Iranna Kadadi from Karnataka; Udayanraje Bhosale and Bhagwat Karad from Maharashtra; K Vanlalvena from Mizoram and Rajendra Gehlot from Rajasthan.
BJP now has 86 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
It may be noted that titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba had won the lone Rajya Sabha seat for Manipur on June 19 amidst high drama which saw disqualification of several MLAs by the Speaker hours before the election. He won the election defeating his rival Congress candidate T Mangibabu by 28-24 votes. (with inputs from Hindustan Times)
