Manipur I-Day observed fittingly PPCM remembers Independence Day

IMPHAL, Aug 14 : The 74th Independence Day of Manipur was observed today under the auspices of  the Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) at its Wahengbam Leikai office and elsewhere.
Speaking to media persons about the significance of Manipur Independence Day, PPCM convenor Jitendra Ningomba said that the British Empire’s Union Jack was pulled down in the night of August 14, 1947 and it marked the end of British rule in Manipur.
In place of the Union Jack, a white coloured flag embossed with the symbol of Ebudhou Pakhangba was hoisted by MK Priyobarta, the first Chief Minister of independent Manipur, Jitendra recalled.
He said that Manipur was the second country in the whole South East Asia to establish a democratically elected Government.
He said that the 74th Manipur Independence Day was observed in a very low-key manner on account of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Nonetheless, the Manipur Independence Day was commemorated at more than 50 places in association with different civil society organisations and local clubs including Moreh, Jiribam, Kwakeithel, Kakching, Andro, Khundrakpam, Lamlai, Ningthoukhong, Thoubal, Thangmeiband, Wangkhei, Lamboi Khongnangkhong, Kangabam Leikai, Yairipok, Khangabok, Khurai, Lamphel, Khongman, Patsoi, Keishampat, Konung Mamang, Kakching Khunou, Lamjao, Thongju and Moirang Leirak, he added.
