IMPHAL, Aug 7:  As COVID-19 cases surge in the State, trucks are being stopped from unloading goods at godowns, said Maimom Anil, general secretary, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union.
For fear of COVID-19, truckers engaged in ferrying goods are being stigmatised and they are being restricted from unloading their goods at godowns.
Moreover, the trucks are not being allowed to park in localities. Even after the vehicles are parked  on the roadside, localities are asking them to move. The truckers are being stigmatised unreasonably. If this goes on, the State will soon face shortage of essential goods and items and people will only suffer more, Anil said.
Highlighting the difficulties and hardships the truckers are facing, he said they are not able to buy food, water and other items on road while ferrying goods. Shops which were opened also shut their shutters or refuse to sell goods to them. They are also not able to go home to get essential supply for their journey, he added.
Asking why the truckers would risk their health and lives in order to get essential commodities for the people of the State amid the stigmatisation and ill treatment they are facing, Anil said the Government should take up all necessary measures and actions to address the plight of the truckers.
