IMPHAL, Sep 12: Concerned over the increasing number of crime against women and children in the State, the Women Wing of Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister today.
DESAM in its memorandum signed by its Women Welfare secretary Sanoujam Nikita Chanu demanded the Government to take up strict action against those who disclose the identity and other details of rape victims and their family members.
DESAM further demanded to provide counselling to the victims as well as their family members during pre and post trial periods.
The Government should also ensure the right to compensation to the victims and their family. Delay in delivering justice is the main reason for the increasing number of crimes in the State, DESAM said.
Rapists, child and women murderers should be awarded ‘death penalty’, DESAM demanded.
Fast Track Special Courts should be set up in every district of the State for speedy disposal of rape and POCSO related cases, it continued.
“Setting up of Fast Track Special Courts for speedy disposal of rape and POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) related cases by the State Government was indeed a very good move however it is still questionable whether these Courts are functioning efficiently. According to the National Crime Record Bureau, Manipur Fast Track Court is among the ‘most delayed trials’” list, DESAM said.
Government should provide special protection and incentives to the witnesses of rape and murder cases in order to encourage people to become witnesses for the sake of justice, it added.
