Observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, 2020

Thoubal, Sep 15: The District Mental Health Programme of District Health Society, Thoubal observed the World Suicide Prevention Day, 2020 under the theme, “Working together to prevent suicide” at the Conference Hall of District Health Society, Thoubal today.
Ch Basanta Singh, District Programme Manager, District Health Society, Thoubal, Dr Jina Devi, District Nodal Officer, District Mental Health Programme and Md Riyas Sheikh, District Community Mobiliser, District Health Society, Thoubal attended as presidium members of the function.
ASHA, youth club leaders and staff attended the inaugural function.
Dr Jina Chanu highlighted the importance of observing the day. She further stressed that suicide prevention requires involvement of all the stack holders viz Government, Health Department, educators, NGOs, health care providers and also people affected by suicidal behaviour.
She said that population belonging to the age group of 15-30 years have the highest suicidal rate.
Ch Basanta Singh stressed on the role of ASHA workers and other front line workers and their role in generating mass awareness on prevention of suicide.
As the suicidal rate is high among the age group of adolescent and youth, it is very much important to join hands with youth organizations like NYK, youth clubs and Mahila Mandals. Joining together will definitely help in preventing suicide and everyone can make a contribution in preventing suicide, he added.
Topics on suicide prevention may be included in the Mahila Arogya Samiti meetings and Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Committee meetings. Life skills, soft Skills and leadership training may be imparted to the youths so that they can cope with the various challenges they face in their life, he stated.
Further, he informed the ASHA workers present in the programme to invite mental health officials in the Adolescent Health Day programme held at their respective villages and localities.
As part of the observance, PSA and distribution of leaflets at public places of Thoubal district were also conducted.
The District Health Society Kakching also observed World Suicide Prevention Day at the auditorium of Representative of Lois (RoL) in Kakching Chumnang Leikai.
The event observed on the theme "Working together to prevent suicide" was attended by Chief Medical Officer, Kakching Dr T Manihar, District Mental Health, Kaching Nodal Officer Dr Kshetrimayum Sumati Devi and Community Health Centre Kakching MO in charge Dr Haobam Surjitkumar as presidium members.
District Surveillance Officer (COVID-19) Kakching Dr Kiran Elangbam, COVID-19 Psychological Support, District Nodal Officer and District TB Officer, Kakching Dr Kh Satyabala Devi were the resource persons of the programme.
Today's programme was also attended by MOs of various health centres of Kakching district, staff of District Programme Management Unit and Block Programme Unit, facilitators of  and staff of ASHA, members and staff of One Stop Centre, Child Welfare Council.
