IMPHAL, Jan 10: The United Front Manipur (UFM) has asked the State Government and the authorities concerned whether the poppy plantations destroyed in different districts were in the budding or post-flowering stages.
Briefing journalists at Manipur Press Club, today, UFM chairman, Sapam Samungou asserted that destroying poppy plants after the flowering stage will not contribute 'anything' significant in the campaign against drugs.
It is very unfortunate that the Government is unable to locate where poppy plantations are practised in this small State, he claimed and asked if the Government officials posted in the districts spend their time 'napping'.
Appealing all concerned to disclose the identities of the owners whenever poppy plantations are destroyed in future, he urged the Government to make its  'war on drugs' campaign fruitful to save Manipur.
On the other hand, the Government should also initiate measures to discourage poppy plantations in the State and take positive feedbacks from the public, he said and added that challenging every person who speaks against them (the Government) would be undermining democracy.
