Imphal, Jan 17 : Manipur University Vice-Chancellor in-charge Professor Dr Amar Yumnam has stressed the need for upgrading knowledge and skill level among the students by shifting from the conventional system of rote learning being apparent in the State to successfully participate in the global race.
Addressing a felicitation function organised for him by the College of Social Work (CSW) and Beneficial Club Meitram (BCM) at the former's campus at Meitram today, Dr Amar Yumnam said that the present system of education has a narrow outlook as students of a particular subject focus only on the partial view of the subject they take.
Education here seems to be limited to passing an examination and achieving success in some competitive examinations. However, such a system of education will not make a person successful in his/her life in real terms, he added.
Saying that the students of the State need to keep up with the ever-changing global education scenario, he urged the students to refrain from studying just to clear examinations.
If not for the Covid-19 pandemic, Manipur University would have already collaborated with various universities in the South-East Asian countries and hold student exchange programmes, said Amar Yumnam.
Dr Amar also lauded the College of Social Work on its students emerging as State topper in the recent final semester examination of Bachelors of Social Work.
Apart from degree and master courses, the college (CSW) can also provide diploma and certificate courses, he said and suggested the college to organise a special course for leaders of local clubs in the field of social work.
Asking the college authority to upgrade its library facility, he added that the college can get books from embassies of various Nations including USA and UK.
CSW Principal Dr S Romeobala said that Dr Amar Yumnam played a major role in the establishment and affiliation of the college to Manipur University.
She also expressed hope that the Professor may continue his term as the VC of the university for a longer period.
Former MLA of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC  S Subhaschandra also attended the event.
