IMPHAL, Oct 12 : As a part of the Nation-wide Swachhta Campaign, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat along with ICAR-KVK, Imphal West observed “Special National Swachhata Campaign” today at Lamsang Bazar community hall.
As a part of the campaign, a digital video titled “Improved Composting Techniques” (from youtube) related to the topic of “Waste to wealth” developed by ICAR on how to prevent burning of farm waste in the field by making vermicompost and it’s utilization as manure was viewed with the farmers.
At the occasion, Minister for Education Sorokhaibam Rajen Singh who attended the programme as chief guest, stressed on the need for boosting the conversion of paddy straw and vegetable wastes from the kitchen into manure through vermicompost.
By doing so, sole dependency on fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides can be reduced and at the same time it will help increase the income of farmers, he said.
He also highlighted the harmful consequences of burning stubble in the farm, said a statement issued by the Principal Scientist (Seed Technology) of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre.
Guest of the function, M Keso Singh, Chairman, Imphal West 1 GP Level Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd underlined the importance of ASHA and SHG workers for healthy living of the people by maintaining cleanliness in the village, the statement said.
Functional president, Dr I Meghachandra Singh, Joint Director of ICAR Manipur Centre also emphasized on the preparation of vermicompost from vegetable and food waste, it said.
Dr Meghachandra observed that vermicompost can partially solve the shortage of urea in the State besides stressing on the importance of soil health to prevent soil quality deterioration through unscientific application of fertilizers, the statement said.
A total of 200 participants including scientific staff, SMSs of KVK, administrative and technical staffs and local farmers participated in the programme.
The campaign continued with a tree plantation drive and a cleanliness drive in and around the area of Lamsang Bazar community hall with participation of dignitaries and other attendees.
