WMC backs ST demand

IMPHAL, Nov 5 : World Meetei Council (WMC), State unit vice president Rakesh Naorem has categorically stated that granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meetei is the only means to save the ethnic community.
He said this during a launching ceremony of a music band "Kangleipak Music Band (KMB)" held at Tentha Heibung Bazar on Thursday.
Saying that WMC supports the movement of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee Manipur (STDCM) to grant ST tag to the Meetei, Rakesh added that a Constitutional protection is mandatory to preserve the culture and identity of the ethnic community.
He further stated that WMC, during its 2nd plenary session held at Guwahati last year, resolved to demand ST status for the Meetei and sought cooperation of the people in the movement.
Senior Account Officer Irungbam Sanatomba, music director Vicky, Intending candidate for the Assembly election from Wangjing Tentha Constituency Manglemba and KMB secretary Naobi also attended the programme.
