Many greet on Nupi Lan anniv

IMPHAL, Dec 11: Governor La Ganesan has extended his best wishes to the people of the State on the occasion of Nupi Lan Numit which falls on December 12.
The Governor called it an event of great significance in the history of Manipur when Manipuri women fought against the oppressive economic and adminis- trative policies of the Maharaja and the British Govt in 1939 by storming the State Durbar and demanding immediate halt to rice export.
He added that 21 women were injured on that significant day of December 12, 1939 and while lauding their revolt against the monopolistic administration, he urged the people to follow the path of  these brave Manipuri mothers. Chief Minister N Biren Singh paid tribute to the brave "Imas" of Manipur who fought against the exploitative socio-economic and political system of the British colonial rule. He also greeted the women of Manipur on this occasion. The agitation witnessed the courage and leadership of Manipuri women, he added and asserted that womenfolk of the day take the lead on various issues and bring socio-political reforms in the State. Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Y Khemchand also paid tribute to the Manipuri women who fought in the two Nupi Lans. He further lauded the womenfolk of the State for their active role in shaping the history of Manipur politically, socially and economically.
Works Minister Th Biswajit also joined in paying tribute to the brave "Imas" on this occasion.  He urged the people to encourage and empower girl child to fulfill their dreams and aspirations in order to make this historic day more meaningful. Oinam Lukhoi Singh, Tourism Minister, extended his best wishes and urged the people to remember the epic struggles of the Manipuri women.
