BPR/KAK/KPI/TPL/THB, Dec 12: Commemorating the two historic movements waged by women of Manipur against mass exploitation and artificial famine triggered by the British, 82nd Nupi Lan Memorial Day was observed across the State on Sunday.
BISHNUPUR
In line with the observance of 82nd Nupilan Memorial Day, a bike rally was organised in Kumbi AC under the supervision of S Premchandra, intending candidate of Kumbi AC and secretary BJP Bishnupur District Committee.
The rally participated by members of Election Central Committee for S Premchandra and youth supporters was flagged off from the residence of S Premchandra in Salankonjil under Saiton GP.
As part of the event, blankets were also distributed to the elders of Kumbi AC and Old Aged Homes as winter gifts.
KAKCHING
82 Nupilan Memorial Day was also observed at Kakching Ward No 3 Community Hall by All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM).
It was attended by Kshetrimayum Roma Devi, intending candidate of Kakching AC; AMNP president, Maisnam Shakhi Devi; in charge S Sorojini Devi; AMNM Kakching president, Keinyatombi Devi; Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup secretary. L Memma Devi; and Zilla Parishad Upa Adhaksha, Ksh Tama Devi as presidium members.
KANGPOKPI
82nd Nupilan Memorial Day was observed at Nute Kailhang in Kangpokpi town under the aegis of Kangpokpi AC MLA, Nemcha Kipgen.
Speaking on the occasion, Nemcha Kipgen enlightened the gathering on Nupilan Memorial Day and stated that there have been several instances throughout history where brave Manipuri women exhibited their bravery against injustice.
She mentioned that Nupilan Memorial Day is observed every year on December 12 to remember the war waged by thousands of Manipuri women against the injustice of forced labor by the British in 1939.
Nemcha recalled that the first agitation or women's war (Nupilan) was triggered by the action of Colonel Maxwell in July 1904 to reintroduce the abolished Lallup System.
There have been many women-led movements across the country, but Nupilan remains a strong testament to the power of women’s voice in India, she asserted.
While highlighting the need for education to empower women and bring change in the society, Nemcha appealed to the people of Kangpokpi to not cultivate poppy and provide their support in the fight against drugs.
The MLA also handed over 28 Old Age Pension Cards and 50 health cards including CMHT and PMJAY to the beneficiaries.
Joshi Lamkhohat Haokip, Deputy Inspector of School, Saitu also spoke on women empowerment.
The event was attended by more than 200 women from Kangpokpi AC including Lhingneikim, ZEO Kangpokpi; Tingnei Lhouvum, president BJP Kangpokpi Mandal; Hekim Hangshing, president, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization.
Newly elected members of the 8th Kangpokpi Town Committee, leaders of Kangpokpi Youth Union and Church leaders of the town also attended the auspicious occasion.
TENGNOUPAL
Kha Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup in association with Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lamjing Lup, Minority Women Development Society and Muslim Women Development Association also observed Nupilan Memorial Day at Ima kondong Lairembi Haraobung in Moreh.
It was attended by Th Ibemhal, president Kha Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup; Th Jamuna, president Nupi Khunai Chaokhat Lamjing Lup; Jubeda Begum, president Muslim Women Development Association and Noorjahan Begum, president Minority Women Development Society as presidium members.
Leaders of various CSOs including MCM, ACODOM, MMCM and AMSU Tengnoupal District Committee also attended the event.
THOUBAL
Nupilan Memorial Day was also observed at Ningombam Sana Keithel by Ningombam Apunba Nupi Lup in collaboration with NIYC, NYPC, NUYC and SDC Thoubal Ningombam.
It was attended by Thoubal College principal, Okram Chaoba Devi; Thoubal Municipal Council Ward no 10 former councilor, Hijam Jamuna Devi; village elders Athokpam Maipak, Okram Sana and Athokpam Angoubi as presidium members.
Similarly, Kshetrileikai Women Development Association( KWDA) and SECDO also observed 82nd Nupilan Memorial Day at Thoubal Kshetrileikai Maang Lampak.
It was attended by District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission member, Laishram Lakshmi Devi; KWDA former president, Laishram Shakmacha Devi; and Thoubal Municipal Council Ward no 3 councilor, Puyam Joteshwor Meitei as presidium members.
Moreover, in line with the observance of Nupilan Day, Laishram Thanil Meitei, BJP intending candidate of 32-Wangkhem AC distributed food items at Yairipok Keithel and Kiyam Siphai Babu Bazar.
Ningol Club Heirok also observed Nupilan Memorial Day at Heirok Part-II Devi Mandop.
It was attended by Ningol Club Heirok president, Khundongbam Sophiya; Integrated Rural Development Service Organization (IRDSO) secretary, Nonibla Narengbam; Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL) advisor, Khangembam Anandi; Dorendro Memorial English School vice principal, Laishram Ratan; women activist Anamika Heirangkhongjam and Reena Thangjam.
Besides, 82 Nupi Lal Memorial Day was also observed at Khangabok Tangkha Leikai Community Hall under the supervision of Dr Akoisana Singh.
