Security forces seize contraband

IMPHAL, Feb 5
Acting on credible intelligence regarding smuggling of illegal goods  manufactured in Myanmar, troops of Shangshak battalion Assam Rifles intercepted six vehicles near Gamnoum in Ukhrul yesterday.
On thorough inspection of the vehicles, they were found to be carrying smuggled grocery commodities of Myanmar origin that was assessed to be worth about Rs 10 lakh, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
The vehicle drivers identified as Somaya Shaiza, Surash Chauhan, Shiningson Hongka, Shagar Chetry, Gainichui Kamei and Hapeson Lahna, all residents of Ukhrul town were detained, added the statement.
In another instance, Chandel Battalion Assam Rifles and Chandel Police recovered smuggled goods worth over Rs 1 Crore in a series of operations carried out over two days, added the statement.
Three smugglers were also apprehended in the operations carried out near Chumthar-Thangin village in Chandel district on February 3.
A joint team intercepted two vehicles carrying smuggled goods from Wamku-Khonjol-Chandel road, added the statement.
The smuggled goods along with the smugglers and vehicles were handed over to respective Police Stations for further investigation, added the statement.
