TAMENGLONG, Feb 5: After three “innocent” persons were picked up by a team of Manipur Police Commando at Nungba, locals have blocked the National Highway-37 indefinitely.
The three identified as Lovingson (28), Hiamngamlung (26) and Gaikhangkhuan (27) of Nungba were picked up by the commandos at around 12.30 pm today, said locals alleging that the three are innocent civilians.
Angered by the “high handedness” of the CDO, the locals shut down NH-37 immediately. The shutdown will not be lifted until they are released without any conditions attached, said the locals.
The three were taken away to Imphal via Khoupum while womenfolk who had gathered were dispersed with tear gas. The public at Nungba will take up stringent agitation if the three are not released, they said.
With the locals blocking the road, hundreds of passenger vehicles, loaded and empty trucks are left stranded.
Meanwhile, civil society organisations and village authorities of Nungba area have strongly condemned the arrest of the three “innocent civilians”.
