IMPHAL, Mar 26 : Chief Minister N Biren reportedly address to Manipuris in Assam as “Assamese Manipuri” has courted strong criticism from the All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union (AAMSU).
In a statement it released to media houses today, AAMSU categorically stated that the Manipuris in Assam are not Assamese Manipuris and they should be called or addressed as Manipuris only.
The Chief Minister was addressing an election campaign at Lakhipur when he allegedly used the nomenclature “Assamese Manipuri”, said the AAMSU.
The statement released by its general secretary, Kabrabam Bikramjit, also asserted that the student body sees the assurance of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh that all issues facing Manipuris in Assam would be solved by BJP as a “lie to get votes”.
There has never been any visible work worth mentioning done by the Manipur Government for Manipuris in Assam and added “we have also never anticipated any”.
Moreover, the Chief Minister’s take on the issues revolving around the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) and what he said while addressing campaign contradicts with the actual rules of the APSC. The 2019 APSC rules have not been changed. The only change that has accrued is that Barak Valley has been exempted from the three compulsory language rules of the CCE Exam of the APSC. The language issue is not over yet, said AAMSU.
Most importantly, Chief Minister N Biren Singh was campaigning for BJP against a Manipuri candidate [Thoiba Singha]. The CM campaigning for BJP candidate when Manipuris in Lakhipur are keen on electing one of their own is very unfortunate. People of the region had appealed and requested him not to attend the campaign, but ignoring the request he came and campaigned against the lone Manipuri candidate, said AAMSU.
Pointing fingers at the Chief Minister for campaigning for BJP candidate Kousik Rai, the student body further stated that “AAMSU takes Manipur as a parent  State, but the people of Manipur, instead of working for the Manipuris in Assam, are helping outsiders who have been suppressing the Manipuris (in Assam).”
AAMSU questioned why the Chief Minister, of all the places, chose Lakhipur to attend the campaign.
