Police foil protest again
By Our Staff Reporter
IMPHAL, Mar 2: A minor scuffle broke out between a group of civilians and police at Naorem Leikai today as the civilians gathered to stage a protest demonstration demanding befitting punishment of all the people involved in the killing of Rajkumar Khasper.
As people gathered this afternoon at Naorem Leikai Penakhongbam Pareng community hall to stage a protest demonstration under the aegis of the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of RK Khasper and Wounding of Seven Persons, police drove away the protesters.
This resulted in a stand-off between the protesters and police. Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and drove away the protesters.
Later, the two sides came to an understanding and the aggrieved people were allowed to stage sit-in-protest at Naorem Leikai Lairembi Leirak. The protest demonstration culminated with a protest rally which started at the sit-in-protest venue and terminated at Naorem Leikai Amujao (Sofa) Leirak.
The protesters decried the alleged excesses committed by the SDPO and the OC of Singjamei police station.
Notably RK Khasper was killed and seven others sustained injuries when a violent clash erupted between two groups of neighbours at Naorem Leikai Amujao Leirak in the night of February 27.
