IMPHAL, Apr 24: Two organisations, Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) and Poirei Eethiba Lup (PEEL) launched two separate campaigns to make Mount Koubru green today.
Mission Mount Koubru Afforestation taken up by the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) was kicked off from its office.
More than 50 members including its president Khangembam Bidyasagar are taking part in the campaign.
The volunteers will plant trees on Mount Koubru, said Khangembam Bidya-sagar before the campaign was kicked off.
The Mission Mount Koubru Afforestation was first launched in 2019 (May 4-5) by the MSF’s Environment and Ecology Affairs, he said.
The mission aims to bring back greenery at Mount Koubru and its earlier pristine environment. Deforestation on Mount Koubru and in other forest areas in Manipur has disturbed the ecological balance. It is high time to restore and increase the green cover at Mount Koubru and other places in the State, he added.
He further stressed that preserving the environment would also help survive the flora and fauna. He appealed to the people and the Government to take up measures to protect wildlife.
On the other hand, a campaign to preserve Mount Koubru, organised by Poirei Eethiba Lup (PEEL), was kicked off from Yumnam Leikai Lairembi Lampak at around 8 am.
The Lup’s secretary Kh Nirmal said more than 60 members, on rotational basis, will take part in the 5-day mission. The members will conduct social service and remove waste materials left by people and tourists at Mount Koubru .
The mission is conducted every year with the aim to preserve Mount Koubru for future generations to come. All COVID-19 SOPs issued by the Government will be followed, said Nirmal.
