People involved in illegal tax collection and extortion of truck drivers and handymen in National Highways should be punished and Government should provide security on the highways by setting up 'Highway Protection Force'.
All India Trade Union Congress Manipur State Committee (AITUC) said this in a statement issued today and added that such illegal collection from trucks and kidnapped of handymen on non-payment of such 'taxes' has been going on for a long time now. This is one of the main reason for higher price of essential commodities in the State as compared to other neighbouring states.
The drivers and handymen had been working relentlessly day in day out to ensure that essential commodities does not run out in the State. Especially in the wake of the second wave of the pandemic, if some drivers were to stop plying on the National Highways it will be hard for everyone in the State, added AITUC in the statement.
